What will be required of me during the authoring project?
When starting a new technical authoring project, SmartAuthoring will take considerable time to collate as much information as possible about your product. In order to aid this process we recommend that clients offer access to any existing documentation and provide appropriate training. Throughout the project SmartAuthoring will expect access to both your product and to subject matter experts.
What pricing options are available?
Technical writing projects are generally priced at an hourly rate (£25-35), although for larger projects a daily rate of £175-235 may be offered. Clients will be invoiced on a monthly basis where the duration of a project is expected to exceed 4-6 weeks. A fixed price may be offered for small projects such as document updates. All conditions relating to the price agreed for work will be set out in the project proposal, which will be agreed by both SmartAuthoring and the client prior to the project starting.
Who owns the copyright and source files?
Once a project has been signed-off by both the client and SmartAuthoring, the copyright of the documentation and training materials that relate solely to the client's product will automatically pass to the client. Additionally, source files will also be passed to the client upon sign-off of a project. SmartAuthoring will however maintain a copy of the source files if requested to do so.
Can we use existing software documentation and style sheets?
As part of the consultation process prior to starting the production of documentation and training materials, SmartAuthoring will assess all existing materials and style sheets. Where possible existing materials will be incorporated into the package of documentation offered to you.
Our product is translated into several languages, will this be considered during the documentation process?
SmartAuthoring has experience of software and documentation localisation. Consequently, through, single-sourcing and the re-use of terminology, every effort will be made to minimise localisation costs. We would however strongly recommend that clients inform SmartAuthoring of any planned translations prior to the project starting so as additional cost-saving methodologies can be incorporated.
